Årskiftet : how a simple ukulele tune became interesting

30 2010

If you’ve been following this blog, you might remember that I wrote a ukulele instrumental to celebrate the New Year 2010.

For the language anecdote, I had named it Year Shift because I had the Norwegian word årskiftet in mind. It was just the result of me experimenting on my Fluke, and playing along a melody I ‘discovered’ and liked.

If anybody had told me that my tune would be covered one day, I would have thought they were out of their mind.

Guess what ?
My friend Al from Uke Hunt has done just that. And he has changed my ukulele ramblings into a really nice tune :

Al, thanks a million for this cover, it is very inspiring and shows me different ways one can improve a tune. You rule !

The first thing I have decided to do is to look back into Al‘s excellent ebook How to Play Ukulele Chord Progressions. I believe I bought the ebook too early in my ukulele learning but now I’m determined to find out about those nifty chord tricks that can change a tune for the better !

Got to go, I have an ebook to read and a uke to strum !

I stumbled across this the other day, Armelle, and
wondered what your reaction would be when it
turned-up in your subscription box. So many more
people will be aware of you now, it’s like beginning
a new phase in your playing and blogging. Also, are you familiar with L’OrchestraFottente? From
Italy, of course, I just found them the other day, too. I’d send you one of their videos, but YT
says I share too many and shuts me down every
few days, and I’m grounded now.

I have a higher opinion of your original version than you seem to have, but I agree that Al’s version is outstanding. I hope you do more originals!

PotofBasil : Al covering Year Shift was a really nice surprise indeed !

I had never heard the OrchestraFottente. Thanks for mentioning it. If YT prevents you from sharing more videos, it can’t prevent you from copying and pasting links into an email (if you were looking for a workaround)

Acilius : Thanks ! I was pleased with my original in that it reflected my mood of the time and I liked the melody I came up with. But I didn’t think it would interest anyone else.
Al’s version is really excellent and his cover certainly encourages me to write more original music and gives me new ideas too.
